MR. H. G. HAWKER.
The news that Mr H. G . Hawker, the plucky young Australian aeroplanist, who recently made a determined though unsuccessful effort to fly round Britain in a water-plane in sev-enty-two hours, has met with a serious accident, will be received with very sincere regret. The Daily Mail, which presented Mr Hawker with £IOOO for his effort to accomplish the circuit of Britain, states that "he has won a reputation that is beyond value, and has won it in a, national cause." The part that waterplanes will play in the world's armaments in the future is recognised as of such importance that the British Admiralty and private enterprise are offering immense inducements for the development of craft which will gain for Britain that supremacy in! the air that it has at sea. The daring and pluck of young Hawker have made him a hero, and the hope will be generally entertained that he will recover from his recent accident and be permitted to add further to his laurels.
