A FATAL FIRE.
TWO OLD PEOPLE INCINERATED
(By Telegraphs-Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Last Night.
At Birkenhead on Saturday night, a fire destroyed a dwelling occupied by an elderly couple named James Given (aged 66), and his wife (aged 65). About 8.30, neighbours discovered tho lift-use ablaze, and the flames had such a strong hold that nothing could bo done to save the building. As the walls fell in, the dead bodies of Given and his wife were seen lying amidst the burning debris. It is supposed that the Fire had b.een caused by the upsetting of a lighted candle. From tho position of the bodies, it appeared that Mrs Given was in bed when the fire started. The husband's body was lying on the floor a. few feet" away. A fire, at Grey Lynn on Saturday night glutted a six-roomed house owned and occitpiN by a widow named Mrg Rogers.
