TEACHERS' INSTITUTE.
A MINISTERIAL STATEMENT. The following letter has been.received by Mr F. L. Combs, dent of the Wairarapa branch of the Teachers' Institute: — ... < "WELLINGTON, 23rd Sept. "Dear Sir,—According to reports in the Wellington papers of yesterday, 1 notice that the following resolution was passed at a meeting of the Wai- J rarapa branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, held in Masterton on Saturday last, at which you" presided: " 'That this branch of the N.Z. Educational Institute is disappointed to find that no reference was made by'the Minister of Education in Iris recent .statement in Parliament to liis promise that the sal- j aries of the secondary assistants in District High Schools should be specially considered this session, nor to the promise that all teachers suffering reductions of salary this year on account of falling attendance should be reimbursed.' "The Education Bill, which deals with both the matters referred to, was introduced into Parliament on J Thursday last, and I am surprised that reference was not made to the measure before framing the resolution. I enclose a copy of the Bill for your information and would especially draw your attention to Clause 13 of Schedule 2 part 5 on page 6. I enclose also an extract from this morning's paper'which explains more fully the proposed increases to the salaries of teachers in the Secondary Departments of District High Schools.—Yours faithfully, J. ALLEN." The president has replied, regretting that a mistake had been made by the Wairarapa Institute, and stating that the motion would be rescinded at the next meeting. The teachers had relied on the reports of the Wellington papers commenting on the Bill, and no mention was made therein to the points covered by the resolution complained of by the Minister. - ,
