Our Own Correspondent. The Carterton bowling green was officially opened on Thursday afternoon in beautifully fine weather. There was a very large attendance of members and their friends, all of whom, thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. At a meeting of Court Marquis, of Normanby, A.0.F., on Wednesday evening. Bro. A. F. Pink was elected delegate to l'eprefent the court at the district meeting to be held at Wellington shortly. The work of dismantling the remains of the old wooden structure in High Street (gutted by fire soraae months ago) has been put in hand, so it will not now be long before the shop adjoining is put back into a good state of repair. The want of rain is beginning to be felt in this district, and if the weather does not take a change within the next week or so, it is likely to make matters serious for agricultural and -pastoral pursuits. The Tararua Tennis Club has decided to open the season on Saturday afternoon. Mr J. H. Kirby, the well-known journalist, passed through on Wednesday on his way to the Eketahuna district. - Mr Kirby, who 'has many friends at Cross Creek, where he resided for siome time, has been recuperating his health in the country during the past few months, and his many friends will be glad to hear that the change has been beneficial. Mr J. H. Wakelin, who has been rather seriously ill, is now, his friends will be pleased to hear, on the road to recovery. The progress, however, is slow, and it will be some time yet before Mr Wakelin ; s himself again.
