A London cable states that Sir T. V. Bowater is the Lord Mayor elect of London. , Advices received by the mail 'showed that the Very Rev. -Dean McKenna, V.G., of Masterton/ had been on a visit to Belfast, and was in excellent health. Mr F. C. Turnor, Mayor of Eketahuna, was a visitor to Masterton yesterday. Mr D. J. Nathan, of Wellington, paid a short visit to Masterton yesterday, Mr J. M. Ferguson, of "Moera," Trentham, was a visitor to Masterton yesterday. Mr Ferguson is actively interested in the poultry industry. The death occurred at Greymouth yesterday morning of Captain John Connor, a well-known shipmaster. He was born at Waterford/> Ireland, in 1839. Mr Harry Musgrovej representing, the Julius Knight Company, was in Masterton yesterday making arrangements for the* appearance of the company in the Town Hall on Wednesday, October Bth. A telegram from Rotorua records the death at Ohinenuri of Auaha Matto, the last of the old tohungas, and the* last of the carvers. He"was ninety years of age. With his cousin (Major Fox) he took part in an engagement in which the loyal Arawas fought for Queen Victoria. He also fought for the Arawas against Te Kooti. Mr P. M. Cameron, who for a number of years has held a responsible position- with Messrs J. Jones and Co., in Eketahuna, has received! an appointment on Messrs A. Hatrick and Co.'s Waitara staff, for which place he leaves at the end of this month. Mr G. Stratford, Government orchard inspector, is at present on. a visit to the Eketahuna district, in his official capacity. Mr Harold Harvey, for a number of years in the employ pf Mr F. Wise, and Jatterly with Messrs Herbert and Co., Ltd., is leaving Eketahuna for Dannevirke, at which place be has accepted a position.
