THE BEER DUTY.
It is reported that the .Minister of Customs proposes, before the end of the present session, introducing important legislation dealing with.the Customs tariff. It is not unlikely that a substantial increase will be made in the excise duty on beer. An increase of, say, 3d per gallon in the beer duty, would yield over £IOO,OOO per year. This would enable the Government to make reductions to an equal amount in the Customs duty on the necessaries of life. A proposal of this sort would, no doubt, be vigorously opposed by the Opposition;, in which the brewing interest is largely represented. It would, however, be, endorsed by a latrga eection of the eommimity r which appreciates the magnitude** ©f thiev brewing monopoly.. TBj© intentions of the Government will probably, be made known in the cowrie of a week ©a: two. In the meantime, puibUe interest in the .matter will be very keen).
