FOOTBALL.

WAIRARAPA v. WANGANUI. «

At Carterton yesterday Wairarapa representatives played Wanganui, and in ia very interesting game the-local team won by eight points to nil. The visitors won the toss and from the kick-off pressed the home team, which, however, set up a good defence. Play was sooa -carried to the visitors' end of the field, and frbm there Wairarapa set up a strong attack, Hodge, Boss and Brough being conspicuous, Faber saving well. Wanganui then took a turn at pressing, but the defence of Tait, Grotibe, and Ball was not easily overcome, and the visitors were content with a line-out at half-' way. From here Wairarapa forwards broke away, arid carried the ball to their opponents' line, where Hodge made a fine mn and scored in a good position. McKenzie converted. Wairarapa continued to r press, and until the half time whistle was sounded had the best of the game, the spell ending with the scares Wairarapa 5, Wanganui 0. In the second spell Wairarapa played with a slight wind in their favour, but with this advantage they could not get the better of their opponents, ,and the greens pressed hard. The local forwards proved too good for Wanganui, and their backs were exceptionally good. The second spell was all in favour of the local team, which seemed to improve as the day woi'e on, and pressed, for the major .portion of the game, Half-way through the spell McKenzie added another three points per medium of a fine penalty goal, putting Wairarapa eight points ahead. From this out, the local men more than held their own, and little doubt was expressed that the greens put up a fine performance. The final scores were Wairarapa. 8, Wanganui 0. Mr E. McKenzie was <a capable referee.
