CHANNEL TUNNEL.
COMMERCIAL ADVANTAGES. MILITARY EXPERT'S OPINION. 'Times' — 'Sydney Sun' Special Cables. (Received Sept. 16, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 15. The Military Correspondent of The Times maintains that the commercial advantages of a Channel tunnel would be outweighed by the national risks. If, he points out, any country conquered Britain, the cessation of the tunnel might form part of the conditions of peace, its recovery might be impossible, and Britain would be permanently enslaved. [A deputation that waited on the British Prime Minister last mointh in favour of a Channel tunnel pointed out the development of aerial navigation, istated that the French Government was favourable to the Chan-; nel proposal, the carrying out, of which wtfuld cement the Entente. The cost of a double tunnel be eighteen millions, an amount that would be readily subscribed. Mr Asquith said the Committee on Imperial Defence was reconsidering the tunnel question.]
SUPPORTED BY LONDON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
