. Sir William Russell, M.L.0., who has been confined to his bed in Wellington for some days, was reported on Saturday to be in a somewhat serious condition.
Mr Will Laurence, advance representative of the Norwoods, was in Masterton yesterday, making, arrangements for the Norwood season, which commences on Monday next. Mi" L. W. Hanlon, of Wellington, who was a successful competitor at the 'Masterton Competition®, won two events in elocution at the Gisborne Society's festival. A Dunodin telegram states thafDr Salmondihas notified the Otago University Council of his resignation from the chair of Mental and Moral Philosophy. Professor SalmonoT, who is 80 years of age, has held this position for thirty years. One of Nelson oldest residents, Mr Robert Freeman, is at present seriously ill. He is 94 yeaEs of age. The death occurred in Palmerston North on Sunday of Mrs [Buchanan, wife of Mr J. C. Buchanan, the Borough Inspector. She had been ailing for two years. Mr V. W. Jackson, formerly an instructor in agriculture for the Auckland Education Board, has been appointed Professor of Agriculture in the Manitoba Agricultural College.
