The death has, according to a London cable, occurred at Cobham of Mr Surrey Glanville, who saw sixtytwo Derbies run, including the famous race in which Hermit won in a blinding snowstorm. He was connected with an abortive, insurrectional, movement in - 1867, and participated in the raid on the Canadian frontier.
Sir Walter Buchanan and Mr G. R. Sykes, M.'sP., came to Masterton from Wellington yesterday by motor, car.
Mr W. Saunderson Cooper, who has been a resident of Petone for some years past, has been appointed Government Resident Agent for the island of Mauke, one of the Cook Islands. Mr Cooper leaves to take up his new position nest Friday. Mr John Blair, a native of Scotland, who went to Victoria in 1853 and settled in (Jtago nine years later, is dead, aged 79. Commissioner and Mrs Richards, territorial leaders of the Salvation Army in the Dominion, arrive in Carterton to-morrow, and will be given a public reception.
Miss Beth Johnston, writing from London to a friend in Carterton, states that she has had' the experience of going up in an aeroplane with the holder of the world's record for speed and duration, M. Chapel. The sensation at first was indescribable, but as she got used to it she enjoyed the flight immensely. Dr, Mrs and Miss Johnston are expected Back in Carterton about the middle of December.
