WHARF-LABOURERS' DEMANDS.
VESSELS HELD UP AT SYDNEY
(Received Last Night, 10. o'clock.) SYDNEY, Sept. 9.
A recent meeting of the Wharflabourers' Union resolved that only three bags of any material should be carried at one time "on hand trucks. This rule was enforced to-day, and lit the unloading of the Howard Smith the new era commenced, when the men, instead of carrying five, declined to carry more than three bags of chaff Three men were.ordered to knock off.
A similar occurrence took place at the unloading of the Huddart Parker vessel Berrumbest. - So far the hold-up is confined to these two stfeamers.;
The sliiip-owners contend;, that the demand to treaU-all bags alike is unreasonable, three bags of salt weigh six hundredweight while five' hagsNrf chaff do not exceed five hundredweight. The men state .that lately they have been -, asked to 'perform labour exceeding-reasonable limits, and to, carry, bags weighing ; two • '■' hundred pounds up ah ihcVJie. If they agreed! to, carry, five bagsy of chaff, they would!, be expected, to carry ;a. similar num* ber of heavier material.
