THE LAND BILL.
INTRODUCEDIN the house. SOME OF (By Tdejjrapti— Press Association.) . WELLINGTON, Last Night. The Land Bill was introduced in the House of Representatives this afternoon by Governor's* message, and read a first time. ', The Prime Minister referred to some of the more important clauses of the Bill. He said the measure provided facilities for settlers to obtain rebates of rent, and for the revaluation of blocks which had been too highly priced. Another proposal was to allow people Ibo take up land which they could not occupy at present, on condition that they effected double the amount of improvements usually re-' quired. Power was also given to occupiers of pastoral leases in the Hauraii Plains district to make the land their own, but it was made clear that the land could be resumed by the Crown if minerals were discovered. The term under which holders of renewable leases could acquire the freehold'was extended to nineteen years. As to the taking of private lands for settlement, the Government could inform an'owner, that his land was required, and within six months the owner could either himself sub-divide the land or agree that the Government iShonld sub-divide it. The land could (if neither such course were adopted) be taken con.pulsory* Regarding the agpregaiioi of privatelyowned land, he said requisition -would be deemed to be aggregatioA when a person acquired land v ho wins already the owner of land. Any such purchase wauld be reported on by the Land Purchase Commissioners, and if the Board said that it was required for public use it would be acquired by the Crown. He believed that when the Bil reached the Statute Book it would be found to be a very useful measure.
