WORKING AT A LOSS. !
(Received Last Night, 9.30 o'clock.) 1 i ; MELBOURNE, Sept. 5, : At the half-yearly meeting of the Australian Steamship Oompaiiy- Ltd., the chairman regretted thai the figurea did not warrant any dividend -be-' ing paicj. The six months' 'working; had resulted in a loss; Other shipping oompanjes, like themselves, were surprised" at the "recent large increase in expenditure in the coastal trade. This was due to the increase in wages and the decrease in working hours of employees. They would make up a portion of this on some freight rates being increased in July. Probably, further increases would be forced upon the company.
