AUCKLAND DEFEATS TARANAKI (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. The : gam© between Auckland and Taranaki was a fast and open one, the play going from one end of the field to the other. Larthe first spell O'Leary kicked a penalty goal for Auckland and McGregor scored a try, which O'Leary failed to convert. In the second spell George kicked a goal from a mark for Taranaki, and converted a try scored by Roberts. Hall then scored a try for Auckland. The Auckland backs were, superior in quickness to the Taranaki men", but the Taranaki forwards more than held their own. The final scores were Auckland 9, Taranaki 8.

LEAGUE FOOTBALL

N.S.W. v. WAIKATO. HAMILTON, Last Night. The League match, Waikato versus New South Wales, was played to-day in brilliant weather. There was a large attendance. For the first half hour New South Wales had all the best of the game, owing to the local backs' weak defence. Tries were scored in quick succession by Dean, Haddock, and McClue. After - these reverses the Waikato forwards displayed more daeS, and repeatedly broke through, but hardi kicking spoilt their chances. The persistent efforts of the New South Wales backs enabled Harlett, after some splendid passing, to score the. sixth try, and Dufty kicked a penalty goal, the scores at half time being—N.S.W. 18; Waikato 2. The second half with few exceptions was all in favour of Waikato. The forwards played brilliantly, particularly in • -fcE© loose. Tries were scored from the local team by St. George and Brookham, both being converted by Dufty, who also kicked two penalty goals. Half-way through the second spell Challis dropped a goal from nearly half way, it being New South Wales' only score in the second half. In the concluding stages Waikato had all the best of the play, keeping the visitors defending. The* final scores were — N.S.W. 20; Waikato 14.
