ROYD GARLICK COMMITTEE
CROSS-EXAMINATION OF MR GARLICK. (By TdegTQEh.—Freaa Association.) WiELLINGTON, Last Night. - The Roydl Garlick Committee resumed this afternoon, when Mr T. M. Wilford cross-examined Mr Garliok. The latter said he had become a member of the Australian Masseurs Institute without examination, he having complied with the conditions. He obtained the position of honorary masseur to the (Wellington. Hospk tal with competition. He had not passed any examinations in Swedish drill. He had no certificate from any physical school with a legal standing. Dr MacGowen, who recommended him for a positon on the Committee of Advice, was a former pupil. Major Hume was, also a former pupil. Dr Hardwicke Smith, the other medical man who recommended Mm, was the officer in charge at the hospital where he (Garlick) was lion, masseur. He did not pretend to be expert in advanced Swedish drill. He had a sound knowledge of the principles of the system. He had never taken a definite course in physiology or anatomy, nor had he" sat for examinations. The only certificate he held was one from Melbourne. He was not making £6OO a year net when he was appointed. The breathing exercises in the manual were' devised by him, and not by Dr Mason. He had never advertised his capability to teach Swedish drill, .because it was not 'customary. He had no idea, when sitting on the Committee of Advice, that the position of Director would be created.
iRe-examined by the Hon. James Allen as to his income, he said he must have been earning £630 net when he was appointed. On the in-, formation supplied, it was fair that Mr Allen should assume that he was making at least £6OO. _ Major Hume said he was an enthusiast in gmynastics. He had frequently .seen Mr Garlicky work. He thought a most capable man in his profession." He thought he was thoroughly groiincEed in the pinnciples of Swedish drill. He noticed that he specialised in respiratory exercises, and . fcliouglit ttat most ous. He was well pleased with Mr Garlick's management of the children in his classes.
To Mr Wilford: He had no qualification as a physical trainer, except what he knew, and what he could demonstrate in a practical way. He had volunteered to give evidence.
