A London cable records the death of Michael Maybrick (Stephen Adams) the musical composer. A Press Association telegram from Reefton records the death of Mr William Noonan, late County Clerk.' Seddon, of the 'New Zealand Defence Staff, who has been undergoing a course of study in, England, arrived in Auckland on •Tuesday. 1 A London cable states that Sir F. Humphrey, assistant chentist at L. Aplin's-pharmacy in Carterton, has decided to relinquish the business of chemistry.and go on the land.He has purchased a property at £oriini. Writing under date, Philadelphia, July 3rd, the Sydney Morning Herald's correspondent with the Australian cricketers touring America, says: "Macartney is likely to stay in New York. A 1 splendid offer has been made to him by the well-known iirm of Spalding Bros., and I don't think. there is any doubt about his accepting it." The latest mail from Australia brings news of the death of Captain T. S. Brown at Drummoyne, New Sojith Wales, on the 12th August. Captain Brown was a master mariner, well-known in Sydney, New Zealand, and the South Sea Islands, but had been ashore for many years. He formerly owned and sailed his own vessels.
A Wellington telegram states that at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Society of Accountants last night, Mr Peter Barr presiding, Messrs A*. T. darke (Wellington), W. E. Best (Canterbury), W. Green (Otago), E. C. Leary (Southland) and L, M. Monteith (Taranaki) were reelected members of the Council. Mi* H. C. Tewsley (Auckland) was elected, unopposed. '
Before commencing the busfhess of the CaHerfcon Borough' Council on Tuesday night, the Mayor- referred to the death of Ml* James Brown, an exMayor and ex-Councillor of Carterton. He had known the late Mr Brown, intimately, and was pleased to be numbered amongst his friends. His death being so sudden and unexpected came as a great shock, and all who knew the deceased gentleman had a feeling of distinct regret at his passing iaway. As* Mayor and Councillor of Carterton, he used his extensive knowledge, ability and skill in the best interests of the town, and did good work. He would move that this Council place on record its recognition and appreciation of the good work done by the late Mir James Brown, and expresses its sympathy with the bereaved family. The resolution \vas carried in silence, all councillors standing.
