The schools in the Masterton district will "break up" to-morrow for the spring vacation. Excellent progress is being made with the work of erecting the new brick premises in Masterton for the Bank of New Zealand. According to the Australasian, a party of Australian horse buyers purpose visiting New Zealand shortly with the intention of securing some of the best that, the Dominion has to" offer. The following tenders have been accepted by tho Wellington Education Board: Fornridge, improvements to fencing, Mr H.' Watson; painting, W. H. Cole. Eketahuna, repairs and painting, J. H. Rashley. Hamua, residence improvements; Hoar and BailJie. The Opunake Times says that the surveyors who are making a survey of the proposed Opunake railway route are • getting through the work smartly and will soon be at Opunake. When they havfc reached that town it is expected that they will commence a. flying survey of the route from Moturoa to Opunake.

It is currently reported that a farm on the Plains which changed hands the other \lay brought somewhere about £BO per acre. The pastures in South Taranaki have seldom looked better so early in the spring than is the case this year. Between 30 and 40 teachers were undertaking this course, and all of them were giving up their term holiday in order to attend.

At the meeting of the Wellington Education Board on Tuesday, grants were made for Wairarapa schools as follows : Newman, blinds and concrete Hoors in sheds Waterfalls, refund of cost of extra work on residence; Horo" eka, verandah breakwind to residence ; Ponatahi, fencing; Kahutara, extra, graift for grading; Taueru, half-cost ground improvements; Makuri, draught-sashes; Dyerville, subsidy on improvements. Every preparation is now complete for the production of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in the Masterton Town Hall to-morrow .night, and we are asked £o advise those who have not already booked their seats to do so at once, as the sales of tickets have been heavy. It will be necessary for those who wish to get a good place iti the house to be early in attendance. Tlu> doors will be opened at 7.30 o'clock and the Orchestral Society will piny the overture and a selection of American airs. The performance will b<}-. gin punctually at 8 o'clock.

The Masterton Amateur Theatrical Society held a most successful practice of "The Geisha" on Tuesday evening. They were assisted by a capable orchestra. The whole of the music was rehearsed, when everyone acquitted themselves in a satisfactory manner. The society will hold another practice to-night, when the libretto as well as the music will be gone through. A Masterton cyclist caused an unr expected obstruction to motor oar traffic as it was returning from Carterton on Wednesday evening. The [ cars were all travelling on the wrong side of the road. The cyclist refused to leave the track, and put his hand, out as a warning. Half-a-dozen cars were brought to a standstill, and the drivers said positively "nothing." The cyclist looked, if he did not feel ! like, a hero. . | There was a civil list of hot less than 78 cases for tho sitting of the Napier Magistrate's Court recently. However, the sitting was only a very short one, for only 11 cases were actually mentioned. Five judgments went by default. Of the remainder the debt was either admitted, paid into Court, or struck out; while in 19 cases there, was no proof of service of the summons. The defended cases—only two in number—were ' both adjourned. * A meeting of settlers was held at Dyerville on Monday evening, to consider the advisability of erecting a hall at Dyerville. Mr H. Daysh presided. After discussion it was .decided to take active steps towards procuring a hall. Professor Macmlllan Brown, of New Zealand, has arrived at Sydney from the Caroline and adjacent islands. He found the natives on the rich islands tending to "extinction.
