SMALL MERCIES.

From the osrrespondence that has passed between the members' for Masterton and Wairarapa and the Minister for Education, it would seen that it is impossible to bring down a comprehensive measure this session dealing with the salaries of school teachers. The Minister has, however, gone a little beyond what was promised in the Budget. He has agreejl that three instead of two years shall elapse .before & teacher's salary will be reduced' on account of the falling attendance at his, or her school. This concession ie to date as from January Ist last. The teachers will, ho doubt, be grateful for even this small mercy, and regard it as a hopeful indication that the Minister is desirous of giving a "square deal" to those engaged in the worst paid yet most important branch of the public service in the Dominion.
