Mr Robert Lee was yesterday ieelected Chairman of the Wellington Education Board. The Ber. Father Kincaid, Roman Catholic parish priest at Marton, who has been transferred to Carter*, ton, took up his duties in his new parish on Sunday. The Catholics of Morton made a presentation to Father Kincaid at a social evening on Friday last, Mr H. Madsen has resigned his position as secretary of the Martmborough Brass' Band, and Mr J. Cave has been appointed in his stead. Mr W. Chapman left Martinborough for Auckland on Saturday last. He expects to be away for twelve months. Mrs Chapman, who has been in poor health for some time, has been in Auckland for the last six months. . The Rev. E. 0. Tennent leaves Martinborough to-morrow, en route for the Old Country. In his absence, pulpit supply is to be provided from Wellington. Mr and Mrs E. J. Ussher, who have lately given up the mail contract and the store at Einekura, were om Saturday the recipients of a handsome presentation from the settlers of tbe district. , Mr Henry St..George, visiting examiner for Trinity College of Music, London, will arrive in Masterfcon on. 'September 18th. Mr Duncan.McLachlan^of Masterhas been confined to his house for some time with an acute attack,., of sciatica.; His friends; will he pleased to ".know/that., he is -making a good!. recovery. The friends in Masterton of Mr A. E. Grown, formerly of the staff of the Wairarapa Age, will regret to bear of the death of his wife, which occurred at Cambridge on Sunday last. The deceased was ahout thirty years ' of age. , Mr Green is left with three children.
Mr Alexander Walker, one of thoV earliest settlers in the Waverley district, died on Monday last at the ago of seventy-seven years. Mr H. Woolven, of Masterton, has ' been appointed by the Masterton Gun Club to act as referee in the clay birtl match to be held on September 18th, under the auspices' of the club. Mr J. W. .Card arrived in Wellington from Rarotonga, via Auckland, on Monday afternoon, and expects to return to Peatherston to-day. Mr Card is.in splendid, health, and reports that tlo trip just completed by him as a most welcome change from the New Zealand winter climate, and the scenery is delightful. * A pleasing little ceremony took, place at a special meeting of the Masterton Gun Club on Monday evening, when the members presented Mr P. C. Cooper, of Masterton, with a handsome set of Leowe pipes, in recognition of his valuable services to the- club iri connection with the; recent live-pigeon match. Mr J. King, who made the referred eulogistically to the good work; done for the club by Mr Cooper. Tie, recipient responded suitably. The Otaki Mail says that Mr Anstice, who has been a settler of Levin for over 20 years, leaves shortly to take up his residence in Masterton. Mr and Mrs A. J. Toogopd and Miss Alice Toogood, of, Feathers! >n, are leaving Wellington on Friday for Sydney on a holiday trip.. They will probably be absent for five;or six,, weeks.' ; : ' p •" MrAvß. Wallace has just received word from Mr James Muuy the London secretary of the Associated Board of the, Royal Academy of Music and Royal' College of Music, stating that Mies Thelma, Peterson (the Wairarapa contralto) has been enrolled as a student of the Royal College "of Music. The sum of £6l 10s Id, was .forwarded from Masterton earlier in the year to Mr Mmr for Miss Peterson's musical education, and those who assisted in rais*ng this money will no doubt he pleased to hear how it has been spent.
