TOO TOUGH, ALTOGETHER.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —A grain of salt would be of no earthly use with which to > swallow such a yarn as that regarding the retriever and the bottles of beer. It wouldn't even go down with a ton, let alone a grain. Whoever heard of a dog carrying a beer bottle? Why, the thing- is utterly impossible (unless, of course, it was covered with something he could grip with the teeth). . He couldn't grip a naked bottle, even if his jaws were-wide enough. Ohi, no; you must give us something a little- more reasonable than that. It is even too tall for a Yankee yarn, and they are usually pretty high. Why, oven the marines wouldn't take that in. But,, I say, sir, if that dog could possibly do it, what a splendid addition he would be to our local police force. Why, he would beat themi all in scenting out '"droppers' " plants, and promotion would be rapid for him. He would be able to carry the bottles of beer to the police station a swell as finding them, and would get to be Inspector Retriever in no time. We do hear of some funny things, especially when we haven't a gun. But that dog's boss takes the "bun" for tall 'uns. —I am, etc., VERITAS.
