THE RAILWAY MANAGER.
There are not a few people who. think that £3OOO per year is too much, to pay the new Manager of Railways. Mr John Payne, M.P;, is one of these. For the benefit of Mr Payne and those who think with him it might be well to point out that the Government on the construction of New Zealand railways has been £32,000,000, and that the jsucrcessful management of this great business concern may produce a saving of many thousands of pounds; every year. We heard it said that the manager of a picture business can earn as much as £IOOO a year. H* this, is so, a man who can successfully manage our railways is surely cheap at £3OOO a year. We shall' be prepared to discuss the question of salary with Mr Payne after the new General Manager has been given a reasonable opportunity of showing his. capacity. The Government wanted'the services of the best man available to manage the railway business, and to secure those services it was necessary to offer a tempting salary.
