FOOTBALL.
REDMOND CUP MATCH. At' Carterton on Saturday the first match for tho Redmond Cup was played between Carterton (the holders) and Gladstone. The ground was web and greasy, and the ball difficult ; to handle. The game resolved itself into a scramble between the forwards, good Rugby being out of the question. The first spell was very even, each side taking turns in attacking. Half way through the spell McKenzie kicked a goal from a mark, this being the only score of, the match. The second spell was rather in favour of Carterton, but tho score was unaltered. Mr L. Armstrong was referee.
WELLINGTON DEFEATS v TARANAKI. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINNGTON, Last Night. Tho Wellington Rugby representatives defeated Taranaki yesterday by 8 points to nil.; The play was a fair sample of Rugby, though the finer points of tho game were spoilt by the greasy nature of the ground and tho ball, heavy rain having fallen all day. Tho forwards were evenly matched, though the visiting forwards lacked staying power. The local backs were too superior for the visitors, however, and therein lay the secret of their success. The looal five-eighths and three-qiiurter line played magnificently, repeatedly nonplussing their burly opponents, who, were relying on their physical strength. Wellington scores were a try by McKay, •after a forward scramble, H. Paton inverting, and a converted free-kick by Paton. = OTAGO v. SOUTH CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.)
