HARRY THAW ESCAPES. 0 SUPPOSED TO HAVE SAILED FOR. EUROPE. ASYLUM SUPERINTENDENT ARRESTED. (Received Last Night,' 10.35 o'clock.) NEW YORK, August 18. - Harry Thaw, the slayer of Stanford White on June 25th, 1906, has escaped from the Hospital for the Criminal Insane at Materawan. Early in the morning he darted through an open gate and through an open door of an automobile which was standing outside. The automobile (dashed for the Connecticut bound'ary. Five confederates manned the car. The police have the license number .of the car, and the names, of t confederates, which were registered at a hotel. The hospital authorities believed that the fugitive made for the shore at Long Island, where a yacht wae waiting to convey Thaw to Europe. The Superintendent of the Asylum, whom Thaw rushed past, has been arrested. Other arrests are expected.. Five hundred dollars' reward has been offered for the capture of the fugitive.". . ■ . The escape was rendered possible through a declaration of the prisoner that unless he was legally liberated tie would not attempt "to escape. He thereby secured extra privileges. '"'■■• Thaw was not informed by the police guard of the asylum at which hotel Mrs Thaw was staying in New York, owing to her fear of her husband's threats. [The Thaw case created a great sensation in America in 1906. Harry Thaw was a New York millionaire. He 'was married to Evelyn Nesbit, a pretty actress. Thaw "suspected Stanford White, who was an architect millionaire of New York, of familiarity with his wife; He fojlpwed White to a theatre in the city, and there shot him dead, in the presence of his wife. The srial was a lengthy and sensational one, and eventually Harry Thaw was found guilty, but recommended to mercy. He was subsequently confined to an asylum. Frequent attempts have been made to secure his liberation, but all hac 1 failed.]
