After the meeting between Generals Gotha and Smuts and the strikeleaders at the Carlton Hotel at Johannesburg on July sth, when th< conditions of an armistice were arranged, a striker called Genera! Botha aside and advised Ministers nol to leave the hotel that evening. Asked the reason, he stated that the ex ecutive of the Trades Federation hac issued instructions that any Minis ters found ra Johannesburg were tc be shot at -sight. Subsequently a Labour leader, addressing ■ the strikers stated that the delegates had- gon( to the conference fully armed, anc had an agreement not resulted, Min isters would not have left the hote' alive.
