THE PANAMA CANAL.
OUTLOOK FOR BRITISH TBAPE. IK CENTRAL AMERICA. (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) LONDON. August 16. Mr Milne, ft special Commissioner of tli© Board of Trade, has been investigating the probable outlook after the opening of the Panama Canal. He recommends that an agency representing British manufacturers open a sample room in Panama City or in the new port of-Balbao, if the latter becomes the chief centre. He adds: •*'. There is a growing tendency on the part of the United States Government to exercise its influence in Central America. This should promote greater political stability, and therefore greater commercial security. Thus, capital is likely to he attracted for developing the resources of the Republics, reacting favourably" on commerce. Nevertheless, British trade can only be retainable by constant vigilance, because the Republics will increasingly depend commercially upon the United States."
