PRESS OPINIONS.
After 20 years of office there is little satisfaction to be had in the leadership of a broken and dispirited party, and Sir Joseph, may possibly think that it (would be to his advantage to wait until he can begin a fresh election campaign. But it is equally possible that he may forgive his penitent subjects and take them back into his favour. It is so hard to give up the habit of command. Whichever decision he comes to, it cannot be long deferred. —Napier Herald.
The comimiurity have a right to be protected from incompetent architects, and to that extent the promoters of the Bill are justified in asking for legislative sanction for the creation of an organisation of highly qualified men. But to give the Institute a monopoly would be a step that tha public would resent very hotly, however much it might commond itself to the lawyers who, occu-, py seats in the Reform Ministry and have oi fellow.-feeiing for the members of "unprotected" skilled professions. —Lyttelton Times.
There is no law to prevent private owners of land increasing the size of their holdings, and what 900,000 landless people derriand is that Mr Massey should make good his oft-reiateratecl
promise, and take practical et#jsg to prevent land owners with comfortable holdings mopping up adjoining faraots or otherwise aggregating properties.—Wangaiuii Herald.
