CANADA AND THE NAVY.
SPEECH BY CAPTAIN HALSEY. (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) VANCOUVER, August 3. : Captain Haksey, of H.M.S; New Zealand, speaking at a Club banquet, said that the growth of local patriotism was not antagonistic to the larger patriotism, nor did it militate against Imperial sentiment, but rather added to it. Alluding to the, Canadian attitude on- the naval question, he said he read the reports of the Canadian Parliamentary debates, and he saw that Canada was only waiting to make up its mind. The gift of the warship New Zealand was a sign that all parts of the Empire would stand together for its defence. The Premier (Mr Mcßride) telegraphed that-British Columbia fully realised the significance of the remarkable gift of the New Zealand.
