The Imprest Supply Bill passed by both Houses of Parliament yesterday. _ ifive new members were elfected at the annual meeting of the* Masterton Racing Club yesterday. The amount to be allocated' by the Masterton Racing Club in sfcakea during the coming year will! not exceed £2500. The Lower Valley Horticultural Society has decided to hold* a. Bulb show at Martinborough on Thursday, September 11th. The Government Orchardist (Mr G. Stratford), gave an interesting demonstration of pruning in PaHiatua on' Tuesday. Another scarlet fever patient was admitted to the Masterton 1 Hospital yesterday. There are now" seventeen fever patients in the Hospital; A public meeting is to be Held at x'ongarpa to-night, to consider the establishment of a motor 'bus service between Pahiatua and Pongaroa. Several employees of business houses in Masterton have been; incapacitated from work during the last week or two owing to the effects of vaccination.: The voting papers in connection! with the election of the General Committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association have been issued' to members by the Secretary. The Wariganui representative hockey team, who defeated' Wairarapa for the Nordon Cup at Master]bon yesterday, return to Wanganui by the 6.20 a.m. train to-day. Two football matches of considerable interest will be played at Carterton to-morrow, when senior and junior trial representative matches, North v. South • Wairarapa will take place. North won the last senior match by six points to three. ' The large apple oTcltard which was put down a year or two back in the neighbourhood of Masterton, bears a healthy appearance. It is expected that a fair yield of apples will be obtained, this year, and that next year the orchard will come into profit. The matron of the Masterton Hospital desires to acknowledge the receipt of a wheel chair from a resident in the Carterton district, also books and magazines from various friends of the institution. She would be glad to receive parcels of old linen. A private letter, received in Auckland, states there is an epidemic of diphtheria at pre&ent in Melbourne and the appears to be spreading. At several of the hospitals there are large .numbers of diphtheria patients under treatment, and, by the latest accounts, there were no signs 6f the epidemic decreasing. Some idea of the bargaining whicb goes on for the output of dairy factories may be gathered from the fact that oii one single day during the last season a certain cheese company in, the Bush district received no less than three telegraphic offers, the last one being an advance on the earlier quotations.—Herald. One of the successful applicants at the land ballot held in Pahiatua- on the 17th ifistant has shown' considerable enterprise, having already "pitched camp" on his selection in the Mangatainoka block. It is stated that several of the new owners intend dairying on the land recently acquired, during'the coming season. The Public Works Department has made a compassionate allowance to the relatives of the Native who was killed in Masteiion some months ago as a result of a knob bening dislodged £rom the Post Office during an earthquake. On page Bof this issue Mr Davidson notifies the public of Masterton that to-day and to-morrow will be positively the last two days of the. great sale of jewellery, china, etc., at the Post Office Auction Mart.
