PRESS OPINIONS.

Had the second ballot been between Mr Hannan and Mr Webb, there is no doubt but that Mr Hannan would have won the seat by a very large majority. Mr Webb owes his election to the desire of extreme Oppositionists to score against the Government and to the sectarian feeling imported into the contest. —Southland Times.

The Ministerial newspapers seem to tear terrible happenings as a result of Mr Webb being let loose in Parliament 5 but Messrs Veitch, Hindmareh, IKobertson, and Payne have done nothing but good in the House, and we hare mistaken Mr Webb if he proves the failure of the party. It is not nwewtwry to «lip *i> extremist'* wing*

before electing him. There is nothing like a year or two in Parliament to give any man a proper sense of proportion, and we are oonvinced that this is an infallible cure for those smitten with industrial anarchy.— Southland News. Official "Liberalism" has declared, not only that it is closely in sympathy with the Federation of Labour and their policy, but that the two parties hare identical objectives. No amount of explanation now, we should aay ( will prevent the stampede of thoe« "Liberals" in the country who, having to choose some party for their support, will not. be able to support the Opposition. ) The election of Mr Webb has thus rendered defeat certain for a good many "Liberal" M.'aP., and they probably know it by now.—Christchurch Press.
