BACK OF INSURRECTION BROKEN. REBELS PREPARING FOR FLIGHT. (Received Last Night, 10.30 o'clock.) PEKING, July 28. The Northerners, in 00-operation with the Navy, have captured the Sukan ports, breaking the back of the insurrection. The Kiangsi Changuns have shown unexpected loyalty. They were unconcerned at the rebels being obliged to retreat to the Hwai river. The Southern leaders are preparing for flight, and are transferring their funds to Japan. Shanghai reports that the landing of foreign bluejackets, including British, with four guns, has relieved the situation. The shells from a Northern warship have driven out the rebels. Country folk are returning to their homes. The district is in a pitiable state of devastation, the crops being trodden. down everywhere. Many large fires occurred in Shanghai on Thursday and Friday. REBELS RETREAT. CAPTURE OF AN ISLAND. (Received July 28, 9.10 a.m.) PEKING, July 27. The Northerners have madfe a general advance, And the rebels are retreating in confusion. The Northerners have crossed the Yang-tse-Kiang River, and captured Oliphants Island. They ar« now bombarding the forts at Hukow, Kiangsi.
