PARKE DEFEATS McLOUGHLIN. (Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) LONDON, July 26. In the challenge round of the Davis Cup contest between 5 America (challengers) and the British Isles the first of the singles resulted : Parke (Britain) defeated McLoughlin (America), 3--10, 7—5, 9—4, 1--6, 7-6. Williams defeated Dixon, B—6, 3—6, 6—2, I—6, 7—5. McLoughlin was below tournament form. He made many mistakes in his ground shots, and his poor returns were frequent. Parke, with excellent judgment, adopted Wilding's back-hand return of service. In the first set, each won his service, until 9— S in McLoughlin's favour. Then Parke's service lost its potency. The Irishman managed the American's service well in the .second and third sets, but finding the fourth beyond recovery, saved himself in the fifth, which was exciting. McLoughlin squared the games to five all. Parke won his own service, and then brilliantly captured McLoughlin's. Dixon's display was disappointing and uneventful. He iblundered badly, and served thirteen double faults. WON BY AMERICA. (Receiveda&his morning 1.15 o'clock.) LONDON, July 27. In the doubles- McLoughlin and Hackett defeated Roper Barrett and Dixon, 5—7, 6—l, 2—6, 7—3, Hackett's slow service, contrasting with McLoughlin's, disconcerted the Englishmen at the opening. Later, Dixon's and Barrett's practical expedience and regular Hackett's. weakness proraised a victory. Dixon was weak in the second set, and Barrett brilliant„ m the third. The Englishmen were r witnin a stroke of winning the fourth..'- McLoughlin was serving, with great pwer, once breaking his racket. He saved brilliantly. There were many long volleying duels in the fifi/fi* set, Dixon volleying finely. Barrett, however, was less steady than usual. He lost both his services. McLoughlin won the match to love, and the game. Kfce defeated Glenny in the final for the Scottish championship, 6—l, - Doust won the championship of the Midlands, defeating Lai-sen, 6—l, 6-3. ' . .
