THE WATER SUPPLY.

TEe Maisterton Borough Council will have "a most important subject for consideration at its special meeting to-morrow night. Three alternative proposals Oiave 'been made by the engineer for improving the water supply. One of these involves the expenditure of a considerable sum of money, but the remainder .are more or less temporary expedients. It seems to us that the time has arrived when the ratepayers of Masterton and Lansdowne should consider a joint scheme which would, serve the requirements for many years to come. Lansdowne is a very important suburb, and it cannot much longer continue its policy of isolation. The Borough Council should take steps to ascertain if there is any prospect of an amalgamation of Lansdowne with the borough. If- the suburbanites persist in remaining outside the borough, the ■ Council should consider whether it is not desirable to undertake a comprehensive scheme for water and drainage. -There is. a considerable portion of the town that is In need of drainage, and the ratepayers in this area cannot fee" expected to vote for an expenditure on improving the water supply until their requirements in this connection are conceded. The whole question is one that mus* be faced in a businesslike manner, and the Borough Council should proceed with the utmost caution.
