Each was sentenced to eight years' hard labour. The Judge, referring to the enormity of the offence, declared that he could not distinguish it from a case of assassins who tver© paid to go out and kill. [Two young women, Clarice Cowell and'Elizabetli Barry were remanded in custody on a charge of conspiring to murder a Mrs King by placing strychnine in her tea. The police evidence showed that Barry called ■on Mrs King, representing herself as a friend of the brother of King. She was asked to have a cup of tea. After the tea had been made; Mrs King left the room, and on returning sipped the beverage. Discerning a peculiar taste, she did not drink it. She examined it after Bafry had left, and found it contained sufficient strychnine to kill 10 people. When arrested, Barry made a statement that she and Cowell had conspired to poison Mrs King. Cowell first - denied this, * btit subsequeiltly confirmed Barry's statement, and added that King had chiellv treated and ruined her,, and that she wished to get rid of Mrs King.]
