The ballot for the Mangatainoka block, comprising 1616 acres of firsts class dairying land, was conducted ai Pahiatua to-day. Altogether 266? applications were received from 37: applicants for the twenty-two sections offered; but of these a large number were thrown out by the Land Board the, actual number of applications that went to the ballot being 1736. In the case of single men who hat* applied for sections, the Board rejected their applications f<sr the first t\v< sections they had applied for, and held them qualified for the remaining sectons for which they had entered. This put the single men applicants on the same level as- thos* who had been twice unsuccessful at former ballots. In reply to Mr R. B. Ross, exr.ljmber for Pahiatua, who contended that the ballot w'A'S being illegally conducted, and forecasted a Supreme Court case, the Commissioner declined tjj, fljraw more than one marble. Mr Ross said the board was ignoring the law in not giving preference to married persons or those Who for two years past had competed unsuccessfully at i/he ballots. The Commissioner replied that the board, was interpreting the liaw as ishould be interpreted, in a liberal manner, and was allowing the sons of a great number of people in this district to go to the ballot.
