THE GREY ELECTION.
A VERY CLOSE CONTEST. MR MICHEL LEADING ON FIRST BALLOT. (By Telegraph—Press Associaiion.) GREYMOUTH, Last Night. The first ballot in. the election to fill the vacancy for the Grey seat caused by the death of Sir Arthur Guinness took' place to-day, arid was one of..the most exciting on record. With one or two small returns and a few absent votes to come in, Mr Michel is leading in the first ballot, with Mr Webb second, and it is almost certain that these two candidates will have to fight out the second ballot. The details of the polling were as follows:
Totals 1958 2147 2074 [The totals given above are as were wired to us, but they do not quite agree with the individual polling results as telegraphed.] There are only a few small country returns yet to come in. They comprise about seventy votes, and voters' permits which total about 93, making 163 in all, which can hardly affect the results as given above. THE FINAL RESULT.
