THE SELLAR FAMILY.
It is satisfactory to note that after the appearance in the London Daily 'News and Leader of the reply of the High Commissioner to the various reflections cast upon New Zealand, chiefly at the instigation of the Sellar family, the subscription list in their favour was closed, and no attempt was made to reply to the High Commissioner's letter. The matter required very careful handling (writes a London correspondent), for the Daily News and Leader and others undoubtedly desired to give very great prominence to the grievances of the Sellar family, as a lever against any wider system of training here, and a good many letters were published, to which Mr Mackenzie refrained from replying, because he thought that by so doing the flame would be fanned into a fire of some magnitude. He therefore delayed replying until there were indications that the matter was not getting on very well, largely for lack of notice being taken of the alleged grievances; and then at the propei* time he addressed a ic-fcter covering the ground, but moderately expressed, which seemed to Lake the life out of tho controversy. .
