ARBOR DAY.
Wednesday next is to be observed as Arbor Day in New Zealand. In some of the more important centres it will be made the occasion for tree-plant-ing. Generally speaking, however, it will not serve the purpose for which it was designed by the Legislature. This is very much to be regretted, A« the question of afforestation is gaining greater significance every year. In a short while, the whole of our l>eautiful forests will have disappeared, and there will be nothing to replace tflieoi. . Apart from this consideration, the necessity for beautifying our townships is at once apparent, and Arbor Day might well be devoted to this purpose. Tt is to hj» regret-
] ted that tho Mas- .Beautifying Society has not fit to arrange some public demo...-nation for Wednesday. However, •: is satisfactory to know tihat at so:,: ■: of our schools advantage is to h • m&jx of the opportunity for tree-pinnting.
