BIBLE-IN-SCHOOLS.
A copy of a leaflet issued by the, Bible-in-SohooLs League has come ?w us. It purports to.be the verbatim report of a '"masterly and trenchant address" delivered at Dunedin by the-Very Rev. Dean Fitchett. In the few leisure moments at our disposal, we have perused tibe document. AVe ihiave discovered it to be trenchant enough, .but as for its masterliness* — well, we have yet to be convinced. If any address were calculated to create sectarian strife, this one is. The references it contains to the Roman, Catholic Church are anything but complimentary. The figures quoted by Dean Fitahett are as erroneous as are the conclusions he seeks to draw. For insitaince, in one part of his address he says "I know, of course, that-jire have not yet got all our people with us." Almost in the same breath he says, "We say that we lhave 75 per cent, of the people behind us." His reason foe making thi s assertion was that the Anglicans, Presbyterians and Methodists represented 'nearly three-fourths of the people, according to the last census. How does Dean Fitchett reconcile his two statements? There may be ai difference between- people being "with, the League" and "behind it." Our own impression is that a good many thousands of the best Anglicans, and Presbyterians, and Methodists, are 0 long way behind the platform of the Bible-inv-Sdhoolw League.
