SMALL-POX OUTBREAK.
DIBINFECTINO THE MAILS. A HEALTH OFFICER'S OPINION. (Received Last Night, 9.35 o'clock.) SYDNEY, July 11. The smallpox patients have so far been drawn from thirty-six of the suburbs. The Post Offico is disinfecting the mails. The health authorities in Sydney disagree with the opinion, attributed by cable fo Dr Valintine, that if the New Zealand outbreak were true smallpox the Maoris would die like flies. Dr Patton, Director of General Health, points out that a mild form of disease, though clearly smallpox, widely affected the negroes of the southern United States, without any severe developments, though the negroes were as ill-fitted as the Maoris to withstand it. ' MELBOURNE, July 11. South Yarra residents are anxious regarding the sickness of a young girl. She is declared officially to be suffering from chickenpox, but the sufferer has been removed. A special health representative from New Zealand arrives in Sydney on Tuesday to obtain first-hand information concerning the outbreak and bring full details of the Auckland sickness. Until then, the Federal authorities are satisfied with the holding-lip of Auckland vessels arriving at Sydney and insisting on the vaccination and surveillaifce of passengers and crew. WIMMERA'S CREW VACCINATED FURTHER CASES REPORTED. (Received This Morning, 1.5 o'clock.) SYDNEY, July 11. The Wimmera's crow were vaccinated on her arrival. Her passengers for Sytfctey were allowed to vaccinate, or not, according to their desire, but for other porta they were compelled to vaccinate. Nine fresh cases of smallpox were reported to-day. The total number in quarantine is now 177, including contacts.
