THE RIMUTAKA HILL.

The Feath'orston County Council. has been . endeavouring . for some months pa it to induce the local authorities of the W.'.iiarapa district to contribu'ta towards the costof put ting" the .road' over the Rimutfiika in something like decent order. At present it ig a menace to motorists and travellers generally. The local bodies at this. end of the while they would be plea ;ed to see . the roid repaired,, are not. disposed ik> contribute towards the cost. The Featherston County, unwilling to bear the whole of the liability itself, now proposes to ask, the Government for, a grant for the work. In this proposal it will doubtless receive the support of most of the local bodies of the district. The road over the, hill ig lurgely used by tourists and by city people, and it is-not quite fair that the .taxpayers on" inis side should bear the whole cost of its maintenance. The case is one in which the Minister for Public Works might reasonaibly be expected to render assistance.
