NEW ANGLICAN CHURCH.
FURNISHING AND WINDOWS. We take the following from the "Ohurch Magazine" for July, relative to the new Anglican Church in Masterton: —The building of the new Church is now finished, amd there can be but one opinion as to its structure and dignified appearance. With re gard to the furniture, so ready has been the response to the request for gifts that, with tho exception of tho all tie aortic/lee of furniture mentioned in the list havd been given. For this month we have to acknowledge tiie gift of the choir stalls frpji Mr and Mrs Hugh Beetham, of Brancepetji.,,, Qthflr gifts have been made" which "add very considerably to the beauty of the Church,- particularly Mrs Meredith's gift of the East Window and the Reredos, and the window on the •south side of the Chancel given by the Vaflanoe and Drnmmond families. Theßeredos is built of Oaman| and Mount Summers stone, and the design, is' simple and effective. The -east window represents the sermon on the Mount, and the work has been done beautifully by Messrs Heaton, Butler and Bayne, of London. ■'".' In the centre of the picture is our Lord in the attitude of teaching, and around Him is gathered, a characteristic group of listeners.. Amongst them in the foreground is a '-sc.ribe, a. relief the lying at, hi feet, pondering upon the new Teacher's, words, and another noticeable figure is the Roman soldier. A little child is playing unconsciously at our Lord's feet. The lily, and the fowls of the air, from which our Lord drew some of his lessons, have hot been forgotten, while in the background may be seen the waters of the Lake of Gallilee. At the head of the central light stands the figure of St. Matthew, as the Evangelist, with pen and book in his hands. Below the picture are the words that anight almost be said to sum up the teaching of the sermon: "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works ,and glorify your Father which is in Heaven." And, "To the glory of God, and in loving memory of Edwin Meredith, bom at Swansea, Tasmania, August 22nd, 1827, died at Uandaff, Masterton, N.Z., March sth, 1907, in his 80th year. This window is dedicated by his wife."
, The other window, which -has'been j made by the same manufacturers, was chosen by the Eev. P. W. Earee. As its position is within, the sanctuary, subjects connected with the Holy Communion have been selected. In one light is the picture of our Lord, as the True Vine, and in the other He stands in. the cornfields as the Living Bread that came down from Heaven. In the diamond above is pictured the sacrificial lamb'. Below are the words: "To glory of God, and in memory of Charles Augustus Vallaace, who died in 1882. •and 'Catherine Drummond, ihis wife, died 1875. This window is given by sixty-two of their descendants." Attention is now being given to putting the new church acre into order. Several working bees have already been busy, and those wlho are willing to help in this work are invited to come and do so on Thursday or Saturday afternoons.
