Acting i ]>oit advioe received by letters, suppa iiientoci by information obtained riuiii special agents employed at tne cales tiie police made a raid upon tlnvt- cafes, which were crowded with smartly-dressed men and women, and ascertained that large quantities of high-priced liquors were being sold without a license. Seven waiters were arrested on a charge of selling liquor without a license. The names of those present in the cafes were secured by tile police, ana included those of a mumber of the "smart sot" of both «exes. Ihe Commissioner of i'olice states that an ugjy K-ature of the business is tin*, introduction of the system of American "graft." A numoer of policemen who were on duty in the vicinity of the raided houses were watched, and were S'c-on to be participating in the feasting instead of doing their dirty. Men of that class, said the Commissioner, did not suit him, and lie remarked that there would probably be vacancies in the force in the course of a few days.
