MUNICIPAL COAL.
Mr'T, ,M. Wilford, M.P., is asking the Government if jt will, bring down .legislation to enable municipalities to dispose of coal. It will be remem-, bered that for some years the Mas-t-erton Borough made a practise .of selling coal and coke from the looal gasworks. Latterly, however, the Government Auditor stepped in and declared the operations illegal.: The. question asked by Mr Wilford opens up a wide field for discussion. How far, are the State arc! nranicip&liti as justified in entering into competition with private enterprise? Is a. municipality-. warranted in underselling those 'yho have the pleasure of; paying ths rates with frhich ; coat' is purchased ? A great many people will ~argue that, unless it can be shown that the general community is being exploited bv a ring of merchants, neither the State nor the municipality have & right to enter into ' competition. The matter ig one which will doubtless receive the very olose consideration of' Ministers.
