A NARROW ESCAPE.
FROM SERIOUS TRAIN SMASH.
(Received this morning 12.15 o'clock.) - SYDNEY, June 29. The first section of the Sydney to Melbourne express narrowly escaped disaster at Rock Station. The express" was deflected on to a loop-line, and crashed into and cut? through' a,■ stationary goods train, smashing several trucks. s The engine of the express was disabled. / Thw driver of the latter, realising that something wtxi wrong, jammed on the brakes, and saved the situa* tion. ! None of the passengers were injured* The driver states that the signals on the main line were clear. The officials are mystified how the express became deflected on to the loop-line.
