THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
The question of the statutory halfholiday came up for discussion before the Executive of the Municipal Conference at Wellington*yesterday. A remit from New Plymouth asked that the Government be recommended to provide that Saturday be the universal half-holiday for and offices. The Executive, by eight votes to six, rejected the proposal. The cities oi the Dominion would, no doubt, be glad to see the day of closing made universal. It is inevitable that they will bo compelled to observe the Saturday. But the conditions in the citieg are vastly different from those in the country. The rural townships depend largely for their subsistence, upon the trade of country settlers, and it would be a gross injustice that these settlers should bo compelled to trade on a day that does not suit their convenience. Thero should be provision in the country districts that country as well as town residents should have a vote on the quostion.
