SNOBBERY IN ART.
A resident of Perth recently purchased for j£oo a picture that is believed to bo by Rubens. If the surmise be' correct, the picture will be worth £40,000, As the Christchurch Press points out, it will be worth £SO if u is by John Brown, and £40,000 if it is by Rubens —though it remains the same picture. Surely it is time there wa-s.-a determined movement against this kind of Hung. Either a picture is a good work of art or i: is not, and let it be valued accordingly. That, wo adtnit, is a counsel of perfection; there will always be a certain sentimental and historical value attaching to an authentic Old Master, but it is an ideal worth aiming at, and, at. any rate, the difference between £SO and £40,000 is ridiculous.
