The death occurred at Eketahuna on Sunday of Mr G. F. Smith, a very old settler of Matarawa. A Nelson Press Association message states that ' the. death occurred yesterday of Mr William Poore. Smith, a very old settler, at the ag ? of 95. Mr Smith, in. his' younger day®, was an officer in'-the Mercantile Marine and settler near Nelson in 1830. He has been residing m the district ever since.

A Melbourne cable states that the Hon W. H. Edgar, Victorian .Minister of Public Works and Public Health, ha« been succesded by the Hon. F. Hagelthorn, who has been an honorary Minister under the present Government.

Deceased was the eldest son of Constable Gleoson, who is gaoler ai Palmerston North, well-known in the Manawatu for many years.

When in the Isle of Maui reeantly, the Rev. H. Mason, vicar of Otahuhu, met a son of Major von Tempsky, who so greatly distinguished himself in the-Maori war, and was? killed in the Taranaki district in the action at Te-Ngutu-o-Te-Manu. The Major's son is successfully managing a large plantation on the island.

As the result of an accident through a motor car running into a trap near the Platform Farm, Ahiakouka, which she was driving, Mrs Fawcett was admitted to the Greytown hospital on Sunday night, suffering from .slight concession and general bruises. The death occurred at Oamaru last week of Sergeant-Major O'Grady, who joined-the Police F-orce at Christchurch: in 1863. Mrs Ann Martin, who arrived in Wellington nearly 40 years ago with her husband Joseph Martin, of Newtown), died at the family residence in that part of the city yesterday morning after a brief illness, aged 61. The deceased lady was a native of Croydon. Surrey. She and her husband left London in the ship Conflict. Captain Hardv, and arrived in Wellington on 2nd August, 1873, after j a passage of 80 days from land to land. It is with sincere regret that we record the death of Mr John Davenport, an old resident of Masterton. which occurred at his home in South road last evening. The deceased, who was fifty years of age, had been ailinq for some months. He was iiiarrird. hut leaves no family. Mr Levi Davenport is a. brother to the deceased. The funeral will lr-avo his residence in South road for the Masterton cemetery at 2.15 p.m. tomorrow.

The late Mr Michael Ryan, who died recently at the Mnsterton hospital, was an old and highly-respect-ed settler of the Wellington province. Some twenty-eight yenij? ago he worked at Rowlands station, and afterwards on the reclamation works in Wellington. For a considerable period he was employed as roadman on the Taueru-Branceppth section of road, and this position he held until the illness, which proved fatal, attacked him. He was a man of sterling worth—jovial, generous, and ever ready to relieve a genukie case of distress. His ever welcome presence in the streets of Masterton will he sadly missed, and his memory will he cherished fondly by his numerous friends in the Wairarapa.
