Advice has been received that the Dr. Wollaston Expedition to New Guinea, sent out by the British Museum and other bodies, succeeded in scaling great snow clad mountains in Portland Island, which belongs to Holland. The mountains have not previously been climbed. The party climbed Mt. Carstenz, 13,000 feet, which is the highest point yet reached. A friendly tribe of hithorto unknown little hillmen was met with. The expedition underwent many privations, and secured an excellent collection of ornithological and other specimens of scientific data.
