THE FEDERAL POSITION.
The result of the Federal elections hrts beep the overthrow of the Labour Ministry and the return to temporary power of the Liberal fusionists under Mr Alfred Cook.. Although the liberals will have a majority of one. in the House,, however, they will be k> completely overwhelmed in numbers by the in the Senate that it will be impossible for them to carry on for any length of time. It seems morally certain that within the next few months there will l)e another appeal to the electors. In that Appeal, the LibePals will oc-, cupy a much stronger position than they did at. the recent polls, for they will havejho flow of* the tide of public opinion in their favour. Moreover, the issueg will not be clouded by the refe~entk proposals, and the methods of conducting the election will bo entirely changed. Ih the mmntimp. the Liberals are to be con£?ratnlnted upon the trompndous moral victory they have gained, and upon the opportunity afforded them of ma-kino; an appeal under clean and wholesome conditions. Political events in the Commonwealth will be watched during the next few months j with al>sorbing interest.
