THE GREY SEAT.

The announcement that Mr H. L. Michel his consented to contest the Grey seat in the interests of the Reform Party will be Teceived with- general satisfaction by those who desire bo see the present Government given a reasonable opportunity of "making good." Mr Michel, though a resident of the Westland electorate, is known throughout the: West Coast as a man of very high principles and strong personality. He will be at a disadvantage in having to fight candidates who are resident in the Grey, and who have strong personal following?, It must be remembered, however, that the conditions are entirely different now to what they wore when the late Sir Arthur Guinness last contested the Grey seat. The Liberals are not now in a- position that they can promise roads here, bridges there, and mining votes somewJiere else. They ard without a leader, and bank;rupt of a policy. Should the electors return a nominee) of the discredited party, they will be in the unique position of hiving flouted public opinion throughout the Dominion, and of having immolated themselves upon the altar of sentiment and superstition. The fate of the Ministry does, not depend upon the result of the election But the reputation of the Coast for perspicacity is very much at stake.
